Boccia is a fantastic, inclusive sport that anyone can enjoy, regardless of physical ability. At DEMAND we're passionate about helping people overcome barriers to participation, and boccia is a perfect example of a sport that breaks down those barriers. Whether you're looking for a new hobby, a competitive outlet, or simply a fun way to stay active, boccia could be the sport for you!
What is Boccia?
Boccia (pronounced "bot-cha") is a precision ball sport, similar to bowls or pétanque. It's specifically designed for athletes with severe physical disabilities, but it's great fun for everyone. The aim of the game is to throw, kick or roll leather balls as close as possible to a white target ball, known as the ‘jack’. Assistive devices called ramps are used by players who aren’t physically able to throw or kick the balls, who instead aim with the ramp and roll each ball onto the court.
Getting Started
Understanding the Basics:
Familiarise yourself with the basic rules of boccia, a great place to start is with the resources shared by Boccia England. The game can be played individually, in pairs, or in teams; so find an opponent and get playing!
Find a Local Club or Group:
Connecting with a local boccia club or group is a great way to learn from experienced players and get involved in the boccia community. Check with your local sports centre and disability sports organisations, or search online using the Boccia Club Finder from Boccia England.
Prepare your equipment:
You don't necessarily need to buy expensive equipment to get started. Many clubs will provide boccia balls and ramps for beginners. If you decide to pursue the sport further, you can invest in your own set of boccia balls and any necessary assistive devices such as boccia ramps and head pointers. Our team makes a complete range of boccia ramps here in the UK, which can all be put to the test at our workshop in North London. Reach out to our team at info@demand.org.uk to book a time to visit!

Practice and Have Fun:
Like any sport, practice makes perfect. Start by practicing your throwing or rolling technique, and gradually work on your accuracy and strategy. A coach can help you make the jump to the next level of competition and even be considered for the talent pathway. Most importantly, remember to have fun! Boccia is a social and community-focussed sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.
